Meeting Kelvin at the disability day base.
Kelvin enjoys going to the disability day base that is a short walk from his house. The things he likes are:
When the advocate visited Kelvin was the first person to shake her hand. One of the staff took the advocate on a tour of the day base and Kelvin was able to assist with the tour. They introduced the advocate to many of the other people there that day.
The advocate wanted to know about what he did when at the day base and asked if he had met an advocate before. Kelvin said he hadn't and wanted to know about the poster that the advocate was carrying. He learnt that he has rights when he goes to the doctor, dentist or when support workers visit him at home. Kelvin wanted to know more about this. The advocate said that he can ask questions about his care if he isn't sure what is happening. Kelvin told the advocate that at his medical appointments he does not feel included. This is because the doctor or nurse asks his support worker questions instead of asking him. Kelvin said that this annoys him as he is able to speak for himself.
Kelvin talked with the advocate about how he can speak up. He decided he wants to change what happens during his appointments. They then spoke to the support worker who goes with Kelvin to his appointments. The advocate supported Kelvin to talk explain his concerns and what he wanted to change. They agreed that Kelvin would tell the doctor or nurse next time that he can speak for himself. The advocate said they were able to come back and talk to everyone about what is in the Code of Rights. Everyone agreed this would be really good. The advocate said they would show some videos about speaking up when you are worried about your care.
